These types of oil lamps were in use in the ancient world for thousands of years, and remained in use through Roman times. They were filled with oil and a wick was placed in the hole at the tip of the lamp. The wick absorbs the oil and burns, much like a candle. (A candle can also be placed in these lamps and burned directly.) Roman lamps could be carried by hand or set down to light the inside of a house. They were sometimes used to light alters or temples as well.
