Folk Art Mavens - Olive Wood

Olive Wood

Because of its abundance in the West Bank, olive wood is an integral part of the Palestinian economy there. The tradition of olive wood carving can be traced back to the 16th and 17th centuries and continues to flourish in Bethlehem and nearby towns. The village of Beit Sahour, in the Bethlehem district, is home to most of today's olive wood carving. Olive trees are lovingly cared for and branches are selectively harvested for carving.
