Folk Art Mavens - Ceramics

Ceramics

In 1919, the British Mandate of Palestine invited Armenian ceramicists to Jerusalem to replace the decaying tiles on the Dome of the Rock. That project ran into problems, but the Armenian ceramicists stayed in the region, introducing colorful pottery to the Holy Land. In 1969, Palestinians started to produce ceramics in Hebron, to meet some of the local demand. Today, several family-run ceramics workshops exist in Hebron. They use a combination of manufacturing and hand work, allowing the customer to buy colorful pottery at a reasonable price.Click to see ceramics being made in Hebron.
